Paver Driveway and Side Yard in Anaheim
A side yard that was bare dirt and a driveway that needed a proper surface. In August 2026 we excavated, built the base and laid grey concrete pavers across both.

The area was excavated, then a compacted aggregate base went down in lifts. The base is what keeps pavers flat for decades; skipping it is why cheap paver jobs heave.

What the base actually is
The area was excavated and a compacted aggregate base went down in lifts — not in one dump and a single pass. Each lift is compacted before the next goes on, because a compactor only densifies the top few inches. Pile it all in at once and the bottom of the base stays loose, which is where the settling comes from two winters later.
The industry specification for a residential driveway is compaction to 98 % standard Proctor density (ASTM D698). That is a number a contractor either hits or does not, and it is invisible the moment the pavers go down. It is the single biggest difference between a driveway that is still flat in fifteen years and one that develops ruts where the tyres sit.
On top of the base goes bedding sand at a nominal one inch, screeded flat. One inch, not two or three. Bedding sand is a levelling course, not a way to make up for a base that is out of tolerance — a thick sand bed migrates under load and the pavers move with it. If someone is using sand to fix the grade, the base underneath is wrong.
Concrete pavers, poured concrete or stamped concrete
For a Southern California driveway these are the three realistic surfaces, and they fail in different ways.

The honest summary: pavers cost more up front and win on everything that happens after year five, because the surface is made of parts you can take apart. Poured concrete is cheaper on day one. Stamped concrete buys the look of pavers and keeps the failure mode of concrete, which is the worst combination of the three.
Edge restraint, and why paver jobs creep
Edge restraints go around the perimeter of every paver area. Without them the outer courses have nothing to push against, so the field slowly spreads under traffic, the joints open, joint sand escapes, and the pattern goes crooked from the outside in. It is the most common reason a paver driveway looks wrong after a few years, and it is almost always a job that never had proper restraint rather than one where the restraint failed.
The joints themselves are meant to be tight — roughly a sixteenth to three-sixteenths of an inch. Joint sand is swept in and compacted with several passes of a plate compactor, not simply brushed across the top and left. Compacting the sand into the joints is what locks the units against each other; that interlock is what the word “interlocking” in interlocking concrete pavement is actually describing.

Why drainage decides a paver job
Pavers themselves are usually a no-permit improvement, but the base under them and the fall across them are what make the job last. The subgrade is compacted, a base course is laid and compacted in lifts, the surface is pitched away from the house, and the perimeter is restrained so the field cannot creep. Questions homeowners ask about paver driveways
How long does a paver driveway last?
Longer than the base under it, which is the real answer. The pavers themselves are dense concrete units that outlast most other surfaces; what dates a driveway is settlement, and settlement comes from the base. A properly excavated and compacted base is what you are buying.
Can pavers be laid over an existing concrete driveway?
Sometimes, and it is usually a compromise. It raises the finished height, which affects the garage threshold and where water goes, and it inherits whatever is wrong with the slab underneath. If the concrete is cracked or moving, the pavers will follow it.
What happens when a paver cracks or stains?
You lift that paver and put in another one. This is the practical advantage of a surface made of individual units, and it is the reason we leave the homeowner with spares from the same production run — concrete colour varies between batches, so a replacement bought two years later rarely matches.
Do weeds grow through the joints?
Weeds grow into joints from seed landing on top, not up through a compacted base. Keeping the joint sand full is most of the answer; polymeric sand hardens the joints and helps further.
Do I need a permit for a driveway?
Replacing the surface within your property usually does not, but anything that changes the driveway approach where it meets the public street — the apron or the curb cut — generally needs an encroachment permit from the city. Requirements differ between Anaheim and every other city we work in, so it is a question to settle before the excavation starts rather than after.
What should a paver proposal list?
Excavation depth, the base material and how it is compacted, bedding sand depth, the paver product and pattern, edge restraint type, joint sand, drainage, and what happens to the spoil.
